A TCM Understanding of Vaginal Yeast Infections

Damp Heat in the Lower Burner
All organisms need water.  If there is too much fluid in your body tissues, fungal and other pathogens will flourish, and will be difficult to remove. We call this condition Internal Dampness.

Treating this condition requires eliminating or reducing Internal Dampness. In other words, reducing the water in the infected body tissue.

The common causes of excessive damp include poor digestion which allows excess moisture to remain in the body, excessive consumption of cold foods, raw foods, and dairy products which produce damp internal conditions, and insufficient fire (Internal cold ). Without enough metabolic fire to steam off water, damp can accumulate.

CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINES FOR YEAST INFECTIONS

In TCM, we refer to most “yeast infections” as leucorrhoea (yellow discharge), though actual discharge may be clear, cloudy, white, or pink. Further distinctions are made according to other signs, symptoms, tongue, pulse, etc. For those unable to find professional help, the following medicines are safe for general use, and will do no harm if improperly prescribed:

            CHIEN CHIN CHIH TAI WAN
For damp heat in the lower burner marked by vaginal itching or pain with abnormal discharge, also known as fungal or yeast infection. 10 tablets once a day.

LUNG TAN XIE GAN PILL (LONG DAN XIE GAN WAN)
Famous formula to clear Liver/Gall Bladder Channel Damp Heat. Used for indications of damp/heat in either the Liver or Gall Bladder channel. Not actually used for Liver or Gall Bladder organ problems. Take 8 pills 2 times a day.

For long-term internal dampness with loose stool and weak digestion combine with Six Gentlemen Pills. For internal cold caused by YANG deficiency,  take with CHUANG YAO TONIC

Another useful formula that has been used for vaginal yeast infection is:

            HUANG BAI – Phellodendron bark

LONG DAN CAO – gentian root
YI YI REN – job’s tears
            GAN CAO – licorice root

For yellow or brown vaginal discharge add:
HUANG LIAN – golden thread rhizome
            PU GONG YIN – dandelion

            For vaginal itching add:
            KU SHEN – sophora root

For white or clear vaginal discharge add:
            BAI ZHU – atractylodis
            FU LING – poria
            DANG SHEN – codonopsis

For vaginal dryness or itching with no discharge add
BAI SHAO – white peony root
            DANG GUI – angelica root
